My Notorious Life by Kate Manning

Absolutely a controversial book, but having once dreamed of becoming a midwife myself the premise intrigued me! This is one I needed to take breaks from because the subject is very heavy.

It’s timely today with women’s healthcare so prevalent in the news. This book is a historical fiction based on a true story of a woman who lived in the 1800’s and was put on the orphan train. She doesn’t get adopted like her siblings and ends up in poverty, living where she was born in the NY tenement district. She is taken in by a woman who was a midwife and assists her in caring for patients even though she is still a child.

The pages flew and I could not stop thinking about this book. I was glad I had a friend reading it at the same time because I needed to process it together! The ending lagged a bit but it's still a 5 star read.
