Wow, this story was inspiring, but HEARTBREAKING! If you are a historical fiction person, this book is definitely up there. All WWII books are sad, but this one killed me! There was so much sacrifice and bravery! The determination this family was inspiring. The things they endured are honestly unbelievable. I think the fact that they had 2 kids similar in age to my own was just the cherry on top. Highly recommend, but bring tissues.

This is based on a true story! The Martel family decides to leave their home in Ukraine because Stalin’s forces are invading. They have to make the impossible choice: go with the Nazi’s who promise to protect them on their journey, or stay and risk being sent to Siberia or killed.
