House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City Book 1) by Sarah J. Mass

Oh boy. Buckle in for a painstakingly-crafted fantasy world, that’s confusing at first but WORTH IT IN THE END! I had to push through with the world building, but as SJM often does, the last 200 pages were reveal after reveal + epic scenes that made all that work worth it.

Bryce Quinlan, half human- half fae is a strong FMC who doesn’t care what anyone thinks of her and lets them believe the worst. She finds herself involved in a murdery mystery case working with none other than the notoriously-feared fallen-angel, Hunt Athalar. This is a story of friendship, sacrifice, and love. It’s a detailed contemporary high-fantasy + dark atmosphere of mystery, drugs, sex, war and power. More high fantasy on this one and less romance.

I loved the emphasis on friendship. Didn’t love the confusion I felt with SO many characters. I’m also not sure I ship the main love interest (I know, I know). While this isn’t my favorite book by SJM, I still liked it (even the re-read) and did it knowing it would pay off as I plan to continue the series! Those that get it, get it! IYKYK. Hang on for the ride while I continue to immerse myself into SJM’s world!
